Rats: Rats

 

Numerous diseases associated with rats which are dangerous to humans. Main ones being Well's Desease, Typhus, Salmonella, E.Coli and T.B. Usually enter buildings or homes through broken drains, adjoining buildings, gutter pipes, gaps or holes around buildings.

Once they have gained entry, they will cause great deal of damage to the structure of the building, damage to the goods and contaminate food. Rats are nocturnal and will hide from humans. Typical signs of rat infestation are: droppings, urine pillars, hair, eaten or ripped food packets, gnawing of timber, plastic, wires etc, nests, scratching noises.

Mice: Mice

 

Urinate and defecate constantly hence contaminating surfaces and food. Diseases associated with mice are Salmonella, Richinosis & Typhus. Live in colonies of extended families and reproduce rapidly. First evidence of mice is the discovery of partially eaten, spilled or hoarded food, damaged packaging materials and other signs of recent gnawing. Other tell tale signs will be droppings, urine pillars, musty smell, hairs etc.

Cockroaches: Cockroaches

 

Many different types of varieties. Prefer hot, steamy humid environments, such as kitchens, drains. Known to climb vertical rough surfaces and hide in any small crevices. Diseases associated with cockroaches are Typhoid, Dysentry and Gastroenteritis.

Bed Bugs: Bed bugs

 

Generally associated with poorer properties and very common in hostels, hotels, holiday camps, bedsits, bed & breakfast, block of flats etc. Bed bugs are associated with human habitation, hiding in furniture, structural cracks and crevices. They emerge at night when hungry to search for blood meals, on humans , but also cats, dogs and other rodents are targets too. If not treated immediatly , they can have a serious negative affect on your business, through bad press, publicity, loss of reputation, loss of business and brand damage.

Ants: Ants

 

Can prove to be very difficult to eliminate when they are established. They have the ability to travel through ductings and building structure, which means infestation can become very widespread. Pharoah ants may carry disease organisms, contaminate food, sterile materials and can penetrate packaging due to its small size. They prefer sweet food and can be found between paving slabs, internal & external cracks of buildings and outside in the soil.

Wasps: Wasps

 

Can be found in hollow trees, lofts, bushes, wall cavities etc, with their nests usually made up of chewed wood and maybecome very large. They forage on a wider range of foods including, insects, spiders and sweet materials. During winter the nest dies, including all the males, only the queen will survive. Can be aggressive when threatened and will not swarm. Widely feared for its ability to sting which is painful. It has the potential for disease transmission from feeding on rotten food.

Cluster Fly: Clusterfly

 

Usually enter buildings through roof spaces, lofts and also through windows. Usually live outdoors in the summer, but in the autumn, they will come inside to hibernate usually in vast numbers. The female will usually lay eggs in damp soil or rotting vegetation and hatch in about one week. The maggots that hatch from the eggs seekout earth worms to feed upon. Very difficult to eliminate and can be a severe nuisance if they enter buildings in large numbers. Usually the same house or building will be chosen for hibernation year after year.

Mosquitoes: Mosquitoes

 

Very common worldwide. Adults feed on the blood of humans and other animals and the males are harmless and breed in usually still water. They will lay eggs singly or in batches depending on the species, float on water surface and hatch in a few days. Aquatic larvae must come to the surface and hatch in a few days.  Known to carry Malaria, Yellow Fever, Dengue Fever and can cause irratation when bitten. Other species of mosquitoes are Gnats and Midges.

Bees: Bees

 

Found in hollow trees, lofts, bushes, wall cavities.Nest is usually made up of pulped wood, eat honey and pollen. They are social insects forming complex colonies, which can survive for several years. Nests are made of wax combs, are in regular use they are known to sting but only when provoked and swarm. Honeybees differ in appearance from wasps, being dark brown/pale orange, banded in colour and hairer.

Houseflies : Houseflies

 

Adults are active fliers, highly mobile and capable of travelling several miles. Known to transmit enteritic deseases, intestinal parasitic worms and are implicated in the spread of Typhoid and Cholera. Indiscriminate in the types of food material on which they settle and feed.

Blowflies(Bluebottle, Greenbottle and Flesh Fly): Blowflies

 

Adults are active fliers and travel several miles. Bluebottles will enter buildings readily to find breeding sites, they breed in carcasses, meat, offal and meat products. They are a pest in the meat industry and slaughter houses, may breed on dead rodents and birds within buildings. Infestations in buildings may sometimes occur following rodent control operations when carcasses attract flies.

Fruitflies: Fruitflies

 

Very common outdoors and may come indoors to breed. Infestation develop in pickling and fruit packaging plants or in the rfuse areas of kitchens and canteens with the cloud of adults causing a nuisance. Some species prefer to feed on faeces and other excrement, prior to settling on clean surfaces as food preparation areas. Several species usually breed on rotting vegetable matter, fruit, sour milk, beer or even vinegar. Their breeding rate is particularly high at high tempretures, females fruit fly will lay between 20-25 eggs per day on average. These are laid on the material that will be the food stuff for the hatching larvae.
